The United States of America, like all nations on earth throughout history, loves to celebrate its heroes. Today, on the third Monday in February, we celebrate our presidents. Once upon a time, this day was reserved for the father of our country alone, George Washington. Then we added the president who preserved the union, Abraham Lincoln. Now, in many states, we’ve included all the men who have held the highest office in the land.
Let’s start with Washington, who turned a disparate bunch of militiamen into a determined professional army that defeated the greatest military superpower of its time, Great Britain – winning American independence. The most outstanding man in an outstanding age, Washington could easily have been crowned king of the new nation, had he so desired. But he didn’t fight and win that desperate war against the tyranny of an absolute monarch just to become one himself. Thus, America became a nation with an elected president, not a selected king. And so it remains today.
Lincoln led America through the darkest time in our nation’s history, the terrible Civil War that pitted brother against brother, and neighbor against neighbor. Passionately loved and fanatically hated, Lincoln saw protecting American unity as his highest priority – a cause to which he gave his life.
Throughout its history, America has been blessed by many great presidents. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, acquired the Louisiana Purchase, and founded the University of Virginia. Theodore Roosevelt embodied the robust, indomitable American spirit and dug the Panama Canal. Calvin Coolidge successfully shrank a bloated federal government. Franklin Roosevelt led the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. John F. Kennedy launched the New Frontier – and men to the moon. Ronald Reagan won the Cold War.
Americans have many presidential heroes to celebrate today, and justifiably so. But during any day of recognition and admiration, it’s always good to consider the heroes closer to home: the doctor and nurses who save lives and heal sickness, the police officers who serve and protect, the firefighters who risk everything to rescue people and prevent property destruction. Teachers who educate, coaches who inspire, parents who provide. Farmers and ranchers who feed us all.
Every one of them – from the White House to the penthouse, the precinct to the surgical suite, the vineyard to the orchard – needs water. To work, to grow, to live. Water is life. Those who provide it are no less noble, and just as important, as any hero anywhere.
